Sad demise!

Veena Vidushi,Smt.VIDYA SHANKAR
Renowned veena Acharya, musicologist, sanskrit expert and reputed author of carnatic music texts, Smt. Vidya Shankar passed away this morning (according to news I had received from reliable sources). The field of veena suffers a great vacuum after her demise, the contributions she made during her life-time towards veena and the aspirants of veena have been immense and unparalleled! My heartfelt condolences to her family members and disciples.
I pray to God that her soul should rest in peace at the lotus feet of the Lord!

It is indeed a very sad news. Being from madurai, i knew about her only after reading an interview in hindu. I was thrilled to know her brother was Subramaniam Chandrashekar, the famous nobel laureate astrophysicist and her uncle (chittappa i guess) was none other than Sir C.V Raman!.. another nobel laureate!! Her father, C.S Iyer was very active in early music academy conferences. It is worth noting that she learnt from shyama sastri, the great grandson of the composer himself and needless to say, she was an authority of his compositions.

I have neither listened to her live nor attended her lecture demonstrations. But i came across a few of her recordings.. among them are these two: a short and sweet sriranjani and a rare kalyani varnam in tamizh "karunai kadale!"

i am attaching the links below.. May her soul rest in peace.

thank you, i cant digest the fact that we are loosing some very prominent erudite scholars in the field of veena. anyway, you might have noticed that http://www.sawf.org has some scholarly discussions on hindustani and carnatic music. It is one of my favourite sites where u get vintage recordings. I am sure you will be thrilled to listen to your favourites.

happy listening!
