QUEEN OF VEENA PLAYS CELESTIAL VEENA

Smt. Kalpagam Swaminathan and myself in her residence, just before she was taken ill.

Queen of veena, Smt.Kalpagam Swaminathan breathed her last this morning around 9 a.m in her residence. Her rich life was filled with penance and worship of veena, apart from imparting great knowledge to innumerable worthy disciples.
Veena playing, according to ancient scriptures is meant to be "rahasya vidya" (secret art). This "kalaa" (art form), treated as upasana (penance) is equal to Srividya Upasana in the form of "nadopasana". Such an approach towards the vedic instrument makes the practitioner an expert in every nuance, intricacy and secrecy pertaining to the instrument. Smt. Kalpagam Swaminathan, a veena yogi and nadopasaka of the highest order had mastered all the techniques and aesthetics of veena. She lived and breathed veena. The last few months of ailment and heartache due to her inability to play veena have been the most critical times of her life. Having completed her remnants of karma, she has gone to the celestial world where she belongs, to the abode of God, in a timeless world, to play the celestial veena for eternity.

It has been the trend that i get a "shock" or a few "shocks" every year. Here it goes again. Maha periyava said to have exclaimed when somebody mentioned her name: Vidya Vinaya Sampann

It is a colossal loss to the carnatic music world.

It is apt to say Veenai, adhan peyar kalpakam!

The great veena player has left for heavenly abode. May her soul rest in absolute peace. I haven't had the fortune to listen to her veena to all . All I knew about her was - she was a great exponent in playing Dikshitar krithis. But, I vividly remember her 'Veena Foundation' concert. I think it was on Oct 29, 2005, and you were sitting right next to her maintaining tala. That day, she played a beautiful kalyani. During her alapana or taanam, she produced a long and unique improvisation, which sounded extremely different or even mystical. Immediately, she received a thundering applause from the audience for that fantastic skill. I would like to listen to her tapes recorded during the 50s and 60s or when she was in her glorious prime. Where can I find these tapes?

Also, as a mark of respect to the departed legend, it will be really wonderful if professional veena players play her favorite krithis during their concerts.

Best Regards,

Srivathsan
