From 6 to 61- always my mother’s student!!

My mother and Guru, Smt. Kamala Aswathama tells how she was taught the Rajamathangi stotram, Omkara Panjara Sukhim directly by the great composer, Mysore Sri. Vasudevachar when she studied in Kalakshetra. I am revising the same on my mother’s Veena.   TRANSLATION OF HMY MOTHER’S  SPEECH- “ Myself, Smt. Mani Krishnaswami and Sri. D.Pasupathi learnt this Ragamalika directly from our Guru Mysore Sri. Vasudevachar. He used to ask me not to sing because according to him my pronunciation was wrong. He used to ask me to play it on Veena and would ask the vocal students to imitate the style of Veena.”                               OMKARA PANJARASUKHIM  UPANISHADH UDHYAANA KELI KALAKANTHEEM. AAGAMA VIPINA MAYUREEM AARYAAM ANTHARVIBHAAVAYE GOWREEM. (MADHYAMAVATHI).

DAYAMAANA DEERGHA NAYANAAM DESHIKA ROOPENA DARSHITHAABHYUDAYAAM. VAAMAKYCHAVIHITHA VEENAAM VARADAAM SANGEETHA MAATHRUKAAM VANDE!   ( ANANDABHAIRAVI). SHYAAMADHANU SOWKUMAARYAAM SOUNDARYAANANDA SAMPADUNMESHAAM. THARUNIMAKARUNAA POORAAM MADAJALAKALLOLA LOCHANAAM VANDE! (KAMBODHI).
NAKHAMUKHA MUKHARITHA VEENA NAADARASAASWAADA NAVANAVOLLAASAM. MUKHAMAMBAMODHA YADHUMAAM MUKTHAA THAATANKAMUKTHA HASITHAMTHE! (KALYANI).

(MAYAMALAVAGOWLA).

Which ever Veena you play on, the sound (nadham) is always the same! Madam, What is the secret? It rings!!! May I know what strings you use and where do you buy them?

Also, can you please translate the telugu conversation to english about the supernatural things( the last video). I could understand it is about Gajja and Aarthi.

Thank you so much 🙏. As I always say, everything is by the grace of God, blessings of Gurus, elders and well meaning people in life. In all my articles labelled as Saraswati Veena I’ve explained how the player’s life force energy combines with Veena and the breathing process involved. In a nut shell the veena’s nadam is enhanced when combined with the inner Veena of the player. Gajjalu means anklets, Haarathi means the camphor which we light and offer to God. My parents and myself were witness to the sound of anklets every night in our house and an instance when the camphor holder (holding a lighted camphor) rose up by itself and rotated few times before falling down with a thud. I will be elaborating on this in my future articles, apart from other remarkable incidents. Thank you again!

About the specific strings, in my experience each and every Veena requires different gauges of strings, depending on size of the dandi and kudam to bring out the inner tone of the player. I prefer Indian strings to German. I find them more suitable for depth and heaviness while rendering gamakams.

Correction in first reply- ......how the player’s life force energy combines with the Veena through the breathing process involved.

On a lighter note, I find this movie clip to be very apt to my question to you. I couldn't resist posting this here. If there be a chance for me to witness you playing on my veena, I will be in awe like Aachi manorama in this clip.

Thank you! I saw the clip! Veena has to be reasonably good and made of Jack wood. Also it will take considerable time for the player to establish contact with Veena to combine his/her energy with the Veena’s resonance from it’s wood grains. It’s a process. If the Veena is genuine and already in use by good practitioners the result will be quicker. Probably it’s different in the case of nadaswaram (as in the video clipping). I have no knowledge of nadaswaram. You’ve raised a good point, would like to try on your Veena too. Thank you!!
